I am using House of Kolor Paints. This is the silver base coat.

This is the Blue Cobalt Kandy color.

Engine Bay...
This is basically what it looked like with the paint that will be
used for the whole body of the car.
This is what it looks like now with the engine bay coated
with bedliner. I used a combination of roll on bedliner and
spray on bedliner. The roll on is made by Herculiner and I
can't remember who the spray on liner is made by?
When I posted a question on Hybridz.org about what to use for a bedliner a lot of guys said I should stick with the paint
instead because it will look nicer and show more effort was put into painting it rather than using the bedliner. I would have
to say now that I have it coated with bedliner that I agree that the paint looks a little nicer, however the paint will only look
nice if you don't work on your engine or if you use rubber tools to work on it! Since I had my engine bay painted before
the install of the new engine, I know that after working on it for over a year and fixing all the little problems associated with a
motor swap and getting to run just right, that you WILL scratch, chip, nick, ding, and screw up your paint if your not
extremely careful! Yeah I was careful but sometimes the wrench slips and now you have a chip in your paint! Theres
nothing you can do about it but swear a lot and keep working! I think I made the right decision for my car and my needs
but you need to determine if this is for you. I love the fact that now if I some how chip the bedliner all I have to do is get a
can of spray on liner and fix it just like that and no one will ever know!
Sound Deadener Install...
I am using a product called "Peel and Seal." It is actually used for
roofing but a lot of guys use it as an alternative to products like
"Dynomat and Brown Bread" because it is so much cheaper. I
bought 2 - 18" x 33' rolls for $100. This is enough to do the
whole interior of my car and have some left over to
double up in few spots. You can't even come close to that much
Dynomat for that amount of money. Only thing is no one knows
where it compares in contrast to the Dynomat and Brown Bread
because its not supposed to be used for this. A lot of guys say
that is work great though.
Body Work....
My car is what most people consider very straight and almost
completely rust free. Now for a none body guy like myself this
is a great thing. I personally have no interest in doing body
work and I will probably never to it again. I have found it to be
very boring and tedious work. Mechanical stuff is much better
suited to my personality!
The only real major work I am doing is taking a 1 piece spoiler
that I got from MSA and cutting it into 3 pieces and molding it
onto the body. I have also shaved the rear wiper and squirter
but that was pretty easy.
Getting this spoiler to fit perfect has been quite a chore! It
wasn't even close to fitting properly when I bought it as a 1
piece and now since I cut it into 3 pieces getting all 3 pieces to
line up properly has been quite the task! The rest of the body
has been very easy to get ready for primer/paint. I know once
it's done though its going to look great. I don't think I've ever
seen one like this on a 280ZX.
As you can see in the pictures the
spoiler is almost done. I should be
finishing up this week and getting
ready to primer the rest of the car.
This was they only rust that I found on the body. It's on the
rear bumper area on the passenger side. All I really had to do
was grind it down to bare metal and primer it. Thank god I
didn't have to deal with anything more serious than this! I
would have been in real trouble!
"VihnZXT's Front Spoiler Mod...
While the MSA spoiler does make the front end of the 280ZX look better it still can be improved even more! The
modification to the front spoiler gets rid of the large gap between it and the hood. For more info on how to do it go to Spoiler
Info Page 1 and Spoiler Info Page 2.
The wheels are 18x7.5" in front and 18x9.5" in the rear
Sportmax 962's. In front I am running 225/40/18 and in the
rear I am running 265/35/18 tires. This is all in stock fenders
and no rubbing. I do have to run spacers though. In front I
am using Modern Motorsports 1.5" bolt on adapters and in
the rear I am using a customer set of 19mm bolt on adapters
also built by Modern Motorsports. The offset on these rims is
35mm so spacers were required.
Mmmmmmmmm Dish!!!------------------------------------>
Update on the sound deadener. After driving my
car last summer and having numerous different
people ride in my car I can give you guys some
feedback. Everyone that rode in my car said that
they were surprised at how quite it was for such an
old car(not to mention that I have the V8 under the
hood). I am very pleased with it and for the
money I think its a very good choice. I would
recommend using a blow drier to heat it up a little
before installing it. It makes it a lot easier to
install!
